What’s the goal? If you have a piece to write, you should have a goal for it. It may not be a piece for the internet, it can be a speech. It needs to serve a purpose. That purpose is what you need to understand. Are you solving a problem? Are you analyzing a concept? You could be a leader downplaying tensions with your speech. Everyone should feel safe and supported to talk about mental health in the workplace with their line manager.

No matter what your goal is, you need to keep it at the back of your mind. It will influence the words you will use, your breaks, punctuations, and flow. If you don’t have a goal for writing, find one. Else, you will have a disjointed piece. What do you know? You want to write. Great! What do you know about the subject matter? How deep is your research? Have you taken the time to read about three to four sources on it? Your work will serve as a resource for people seeking information. Thus, you need to know a lot about it. Readers are not stupid. They can detect if you don’t know much about what you’re talking about in a few paragraphs. These are people who have seen the problem and want to know if you understand their problems specifically. You can’t go beating around the bush on this. In some niches, you can’t write if you don’t have experience in that niche. It is one of the best I have seen on the internet. It makes for an interesting read. To have an idea, go through other pages presenting a similar content to your piece. See how they are written, look at the structure, see what you can incorporate, and find what you can improve on. Who is your target audience? Who is going to read that piece of yours? Is it the fashionable lady you’re recommending a $300 designer purse to? Or a new blogger looking for the best hosting company? It can also be that age is a factor with your audience. If your audience mostly comprises millennials, you don’t want to write as if they are retired or at the brink of retirement. Understand the pain points of your audience. What fears do they have? What solutions are they seeking? What do they know? These questions are very important in understanding who you’re writing to. And ultimately, you need the answers to develop your persona.
